Educators understand and use data to drive their instruction and support students in achieving their learning goals.
Analyzing Data
To improve teaching and learning, we must have data regarding student performance. There are many ways to obtain this data and then use it to determine the actions needed to guide instruction and improve student performance. The artifacts on this page demonstrate my usage of tools designed to gather and analyze student data that can then be used to take action.
PollEverywhere and Plickers
I feel that formative assessment is key to guiding instruction as a lesson progresses. PollEverywhere and Plickers are both formative assessment tools that can be used to quickly and easily gauge student learning during or immediately after a lesson. I created a PollEverywhere poll and an assessment in Plickers to assess student comprehension. Click the buttons below to access screenshots of each assessment type.
Rubrics
Rubrics can help instructors assess student work based on eastablished standards, eliminating bias and providing students with the information they need when crafting the assignment. Instructors can also use the data gleaned from rubrics to determine if changes should be made to the assignment. Below is an example of a rubric I created using the Rubistar website. With this rubric, I could grade student submissions of a Civil War map based on the categories and standards shown.
Create a Graph
Students must also learn how to analyze data. Although this task can be performed in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, this might provide difficult for some students, particularly younger ones. I created a graph using the Create a Graph website. Click the button below to view my process. This tool would allow students to get started with data analyis.
